In 2009, Eric Siegfried put $27,000 of his own money into a hardware idea: a chip that plugged into a Garmin GPS device and overlaid land-ownership boundaries onto it, so a hunter could tell in real time whether they were standing on public land, private land, or someone else's hunting lease. He ran the operation out of his wife's scrapbooking room, copying the software onto microSD cards and printing labels himself.[1] The company, onX, is now headquartered in Missoula and has raised $87 million in a single funding round.[1]
The original chip-and-microSD product was a real business, but a narrow one. In 2013, onX pivoted to mobile apps, opening the same land-ownership data to anyone with a smartphone instead of a specific GPS-device hack -- and the company grew from there into three separate product lines: onX Hunt, onX Offroad, and onX Backcountry, each solving the identical underlying problem (whose land is this, and can I legally be here) for a different outdoor activity.[1]
Missoula built its economy on timber for most of its history -- rail, mills, the lumber that came out of five converging valleys. onX has nothing to do with that industry, and everything to do with the town it grew up in anyway. The company didn't relocate to Missoula chasing a tech-hub incentive package; it started there because that's where Siegfried already was, solving a problem he personally had. The town's transition from a timber economy to one that also produces a $20-million-round mapping company didn't require a coordinated economic-development plan. It required one specific person's $27,000 bet to land in the right spare room.
Why does this matter? A land-ownership data problem is a real, specific, checkable thing -- not a generic "outdoor tech" trend story. Siegfried built a company by answering one narrow question (whose land am I on right now) precisely enough that hunters, off-roaders, and backcountry hikers all turned out to need the same answer. Missoula gets credit in the broader story as the place it happened, but the actual mechanism was one engineer's specific, self-funded refusal to guess at a property line.
