Labs
The national and corporate research labs behind the 20th century's actual physics and computing infrastructure.
The labs produce the people who produce the companies. Not the labs directly seeding companies as an abstract handoff -- specific trained people, carrying what they learned, out the door. Seymour Cray was Control Data Corporation's chief architect before he left in 1972 to found Cray Research. William Shockley left Bell Labs in 1956; eight of his own engineers, trained under him, left in turn a year later to found Fairchild Semiconductor -- the direct root of Intel and AMD. Jim Clark was a Stanford professor before founding Silicon Graphics, and founded Netscape after that. Most of the companies below this line -- DEC, CDC, Compaq, SGI -- no longer exist as independent companies; what they produced, and the people their labs formed, still does.
Los Alamos and Sandia sit behind the Santa Fe Analysis piece; Bell Labs, GE Research, and DuPont sit behind the Generators material in docs/analysis_drafts.md. Ordered by founding year -- the roster runs from 1900 (GE Research, arguably the first true corporate industrial lab) through 1984 (Bellcore, the direct institutional descendant of Bell Labs after the AT&T breakup).

Corning Glass Works' research operation, tracing to its first dedicated research department in 1908 and consolidated at the Sullivan Park campus starting 1965. Developed Pyrex (1915) and, in 1970, the first practical low-loss optical fiber (Robert Maurer, Donald Keck, Peter Schultz) -- the physical medium the modern internet's long-haul backbone still runs on. Gorilla Glass followed decades later.

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

NASA's lead center for robotic space exploration — a federally funded R&D center managed by Caltech. Builds and operates the Mars rovers (Curiosity, Perseverance), the Voyager probes, and the Deep Space Network. Beyond the missions it is one of LA's largest compute/data operations: petabyte-scale mission data, deep-space signal processing, and mission supercomputing. The overlooked through-line for the LA edition — the same region that renders Hollywood's films processes the solar system's data.
