Labs
American innovation, traced to where it actually came from: where the country invested in research became what the country was capable of being.
The labs produce the people who produce the companies. Not the labs directly seeding companies as an abstract handoff -- specific trained people, carrying what they learned, out the door. Seymour Cray was Control Data Corporation's chief architect before he left in 1972 to found Cray Research. William Shockley left Bell Labs in 1956; eight of his own engineers, trained under him, left in turn a year later to found Fairchild Semiconductor -- the direct root of Intel and AMD. Jim Clark was a Stanford professor before founding Silicon Graphics, and founded Netscape after that. Most of the companies below this line -- DEC, CDC, Compaq, SGI -- no longer exist as independent companies; what they produced, and the people their labs formed, still does. Corning is the same mechanism running through the technology itself, not just the people who carried it out the door -- and it happened twice, decades apart, from the same lab. Corning's 1970 breakthrough (Robert Maurer, Donald Keck, and Peter Schultz, the first optical fiber with loss low enough to carry real signal) made fiber-optic transmission commercially viable; the fiber networks built on it, run by companies like Metropolitan Fiber Systems, are the literal physical layer that let MAE-East (1992, Northern Virginia) and MAE-West (1994, Silicon Valley) exist at all -- the first commercial internet exchange points where competing networks actually interconnected, the backbone the modern internet grew from. Separately, Corning shelved an alkali-aluminosilicate glass called Chemcor in the 1960s for lack of a market -- until Steve Jobs called Corning's CEO six months before the 2007 iPhone launch asking for scratch-resistant glass. Corning scaled Chemcor to mass production as Gorilla Glass in that window; it shipped on the original iPhone and is now on more than a billion devices. Two unrelated modern outcomes, an iPhone screen and the internet's own physical backbone, both running back through the same lab's research, decades apart, on separate lines nobody would connect without tracing them. Los Alamos and Sandia sit behind the Santa Fe Analysis piece; Bell Labs, GE Research, and DuPont sit behind the Generators material. Ordered by founding year below -- the roster runs from 1900 (GE Research, arguably the first true corporate industrial lab) through 1984 (Bellcore, the direct institutional descendant of Bell Labs after the AT&T breakup). And the same question, run against a domain where a lab isn't the answer: Sector migration asks why mountain biking clusters in Moab and sailing stayed identified with Downeast Maine -- no lab seeded either one. Geography and government did most of the work instead, with personal preference as the last mover, not the first -- the same causal question, answered a different way.
