Santa Fe — the only successful Native uprising against a European colonial power in North America
In 1680 Pueblo peoples drove Spanish colonizers out of New Mexico for twelve years -- and the same small city later became a zoning-mandated tourist brand, the secret front door to the Manhattan Project, and the reason modern computing runs on the architecture it does.

Santa Fe is usually sold as a mood: adobe walls, turquoise sky, an art-colony postcard. The actual history underneath the postcard is sharper than the postcard admits — a Native revolt that succeeded for over a decade, and a 20th-century legal decision that then built an entire tourist economy on the aesthetic of the people that revolt was fighting to protect.

The founding, and the uprising nobody teaches. Pedro de Peralta founded Santa Fe in 1610 as the capital of Spanish New Mexico, on land Tewa-speaking Pueblo peoples had already occupied for centuries — making it the oldest state capital in the US, older than the country itself by over a century and a half. Spanish colonial rule suppressed Pueblo religious practice and extracted forced labor for decades. In 1680, Popé, a religious leader from Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan Pueblo) who had been publicly whipped by Spanish authorities for practicing traditional religion, organized a coordinated uprising across multiple Pueblo communities — a genuinely difficult feat of clandestine organizing across language groups and long distances, using knotted cords to synchronize the attack date. The Pueblo Revolt killed roughly 400 Spanish colonists and drove the rest out of New Mexico entirely. Santa Fe, and the whole colony, stayed independent of Spanish rule for twelve years — the only sustained, successful expulsion of a European colonial power by Native Americans anywhere in what's now the United States. Diego de Vargas led the Spanish reconquest in 1692, and it was deliberately less violent than the original conquest — lessons learned from the revolt, real concessions made to avoid provoking a second one.

The rebranding, three centuries later, of the same aesthetic the revolt was fighting to protect. By the early 1900s, Santa Fe's economy needed a new identity — the railroad had bypassed the city center, and the old Spanish colonial capital was economically stagnant. Archaeologist Edgar Lee Hewett, founder of the Museum of New Mexico (1909), began actively promoting "Santa Fe Style" — a deliberate architectural aesthetic blending Pueblo adobe forms with Spanish colonial and territorial elements — as the city's civic identity and tourist draw. That promotional groundwork became law in 1957: architect John Gaw Meem led the committee that wrote Santa Fe's Historic Zoning Ordinance, legally mandating Spanish-Pueblo or Territorial Revival style for all new construction in the historic district — one of the first US cities to require a specific architectural style by law. The tourist economy built on that mandate is the city's largest industry today.

Between the two, thirty-five miles away, the same downtown carried the most consequential secret of the 20th century. In 1943, the US Army chose the isolated Pajarito Plateau — site of the old Los Alamos Ranch School — as the secret laboratory for the Manhattan Project. The choice traces to one man's personal history with the land: J. Robert Oppenheimer had fallen in love with northern New Mexico as a teenager, horse-packing through the Sangre de Cristo and Jemez mountains in the early 1920s, and on one of those trips had ridden across the same Pajarito Plateau and past the Ranch School itself. Twenty years later, he recommended that exact site to General Leslie Groves. Santa Fe's own downtown became the secret project's only door: Oppenheimer personally hired Dorothy McKibbin to run an unmarked office at 109 East Palace Avenue, and for the length of the war every scientist, every family member, and every shipment bound for "the Hill" passed through her desk first — she issued the passes, gave the directions, and became known as the Gatekeeper of Los Alamos. The same city that sold Popé's people's aesthetic as a tourist brand was, at the same time in its own history, the front door to the atomic bomb.

The project itself existed because of an earlier, separate act of persecution and migration. The Manhattan Project's actual starting point predates Los Alamos by four years: in August 1939, Leo Szilard — a Hungarian-Jewish physicist who had already fled Nazi Germany once, in 1933 — drafted a letter warning that Germany could be developing an atomic weapon, and brought it to Albert Einstein, another Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany, to sign and send to President Roosevelt. That letter is the direct, documented reason the US government began funding nuclear research at all. The theoretical division Oppenheimer assembled at Los Alamos ran disproportionately through refugee scientists who had fled the same regime the weapon was ultimately built to defeat: Hans Bethe (fled Nazi Germany in 1933), Edward Teller and Eugene Wigner (Hungarian-Jewish refugees), Niels Bohr (fled Nazi-occupied Denmark by fishing boat in 1943), among others. The same antisemitic persecution that drove them out of Europe is a direct, documented input into why the Allied program had the specific scientific talent it had, when it had it — Nazi Germany's own racial policy actively exported the expertise that helped build the weapon used against it.

The line runs forward from there, into the machine modern computing still runs on. After the war, Oppenheimer became Director of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton (1947-1966), and it was under his own directorship, from 1946 to 1951, that mathematician John von Neumann built the IAS machine — the prototype stored-program computer whose basic architecture (a single memory holding both instructions and data) still underlies effectively every digital computer built since, "the von Neumann architecture." Funding came partly from the Atomic Energy Commission, a direct institutional line back to the same weapons program: MANIAC, a Los Alamos machine built on the IAS design, ran the hydrogen bomb's own calculations. The same man whose personal attachment to a New Mexico plateau put the bomb where it was built also, a few years later, put his own institute behind the machine architecture computing itself still runs on.

And underneath the famous names, the hidden stories the Manhattan Project's own history usually leaves out. Before the electronic machines existed, the calculations still had to be done — by hand and by mechanical calculator, at both Los Alamos and Princeton, by rooms of workers most published histories don't name individually, disproportionately women, many of them wives of the scientists whose names the history does remember. Dorothy McKibbin herself is the exception that proves the rule: her name survived because her job happened to be the front door everyone had to walk through. Most of the people who did the actual arithmetic that made the bomb and the bomb's own successor calculations possible did not get a front door, and their names mostly didn't survive the way Oppenheimer's, von Neumann's, or even McKibbin's did.

Read together, not separately: the aesthetic that now sells Santa Fe to tourists is the same visual language Popé's own people were defending when they drove Spanish colonizers out in 1680. One act of will removed a colonial power for twelve years; three centuries later, a different act of will turned the culture that power had tried to suppress into a zoning ordinance and an economy; in the middle of that same century, a third act of will — one man's affection for a specific stretch of land, and one woman's unglamorous work at a desk on a downtown street — made the same small city the gateway to the most destructive weapon ever built, and that same recommendation put its own institutional weight behind the machine architecture modern computing still runs on. The scientific talent that made the weapon possible at all traces to a separate act of will four years earlier — Szilard and Einstein's 1939 letter — itself downstream of the same European persecution that scattered a generation of Jewish physicists directly into the program that would help defeat the regime that expelled them. And underneath all of those named acts, an unnamed one more: the rooms of uncredited people, mostly women, who did the actual arithmetic by hand before any machine existed to do it for them. None of these facts cancel each other. All of them are what actually happened, in the same small city and the plateau thirty-five miles from it.

Who's on the lever Popé, singularly — organizing across Pueblo communities that didn't share a language, around a synchronized date, is one of the more remarkable acts of coordinated will in colonial-era North American history, not a diffuse uprising. Pedro de Peralta, singularly, founding the colony in the first place. Edgar Lee Hewett, tilting Santa Fe's civic identity toward a specific aesthetic starting in the 1900s; John Gaw Meem, singularly, turning that promotional aesthetic into binding law in 1957 — the specific act of will and determination that actually built the modern tourist economy. J. Robert Oppenheimer, singularly, whose personal attachment to one specific plateau, formed decades before the war, is the actual reason the Manhattan Project ended up in New Mexico at all. Dorothy McKibbin, singularly, the specific, named person the entire secret project's daily functioning ran through. John von Neumann, singularly, building the actual machine — under Oppenheimer's own institutional roof — whose basic architecture modern computing still runs on. Leo Szilard and Albert Einstein, together, writing and signing the specific 1939 letter that started US government funding of nuclear research at all. And a lever this piece can name the existence of but not the names on it: the uncredited human computers, disproportionately women, whose hand-calculations made both the bomb and the earliest electronic computers possible before those computers existed to replace that work.
