This isn't one national number — it's 12 regions of the country, each with its own Federal Reserve bank describing local business conditions in its own words: expanding, stable, mixed, or contracting. We put those four words on a scale here just so every region's line can fit on one chart — it isn't a stock index or a number the Fed itself publishes, only their own words, plotted over time. Pick two regions below to compare them side by side. The thick red line is the whole country's average regardless of which pair you pick. The dashed line is the interest rate the Federal Reserve sets (sometimes called the "Fed Funds rate"), plotted on the same timeline, so you can see how people feel next to what the Fed actually did about rates.
