We're building this live.
Not "live" as in shipped and now just iterating on polish — live as in the shape of Ayni itself is still forming while you're looking at it. A Report that exists today might get a new denominator next month because we finally found the honest one. A grain that seemed to fit — Sector, sitting right next to County and Metro and Jurisdiction — turned out not to belong there at all, once we looked hard enough at what actually made it different. That happened this week. It will happen again.
We collect first, then we understand what we collected
This isn't backwards, even though it can feel that way from the outside. Population by county, FEMA hazard scores, CDC health data, election returns, company records — all of it went in before we knew exactly what we'd be able to say with it. An opinion about what a place is worth isn't worth much until it's been checked against something real, and you can't check an opinion against data you haven't collected yet. So the collecting comes first, every time, even when it means a page exists for a few weeks before we're sure it's asking the right question.
Which means the site itself isn't finished, and won't look finished for a while. Some of what's here today will move, get renamed, get merged into something else, or turn out to have been asking the wrong question from the start. We're sorry for the inconvenience that causes — a bookmark that breaks, a number that changes, a page that disappears because we finally admitted the denominator underneath it was never honest.
The good news: you can build this with us
Every dataset on the Data page is there because we went and got it, or because someone told us it existed and we went and got it. Every Report exists because a real question came up and we could actually answer it with what's already on file. Every Analysis piece traces a causal chain someone had to already know before it could be written down. None of that scales by us reading harder in a room by ourselves.
So: what connections do you see that we don't?
You know your county, your industry, your institution, your family's own history in a place, in a way no dataset captures on its own. If a Report is missing the one number that would make it actually useful to you, say so. If two things on this site should obviously be linked and aren't — the way we just linked the Labs page to the Sector Migration piece, once we realized they were the same question asked two different ways — tell us. A page that's confidently wrong about something you know cold is worth more to us than a page that was quietly right and nobody checked.
And separately: what would you like to know?
Not what we've already decided to build next — what you're actually trying to find out about a place, that you can't get anywhere else right now. That's the real backlog. We're still figuring out the best way to hear it, but for now: the question itself, asked plainly, is the most useful thing you can hand us.
