Ofinno, a research lab in Reston, Virginia, doesn't sell a single physical product. Founded in 2011 by Esmael Dinan, it develops technology for 5G wireless, next-generation Wi-Fi, integrated circuits, and video compression -- then patents what it builds and licenses those patents to the companies that actually make phones, base stations, and chips.[1] A real, independent count against the full USPTO granted-patent record confirms the shape of the business directly: 1,147 distinct granted patents and 1,613 pre-grant publications, concentrated almost entirely in two categories -- Wireless Communication Networks and Digital Information Transmission.[2] That's not a patent portfolio sitting next to the business. That is the business.
Dinan holds more than 2,000 U.S. granted patents by Ofinno's own count and is named among the ten most prolific inventors alive.[3] An independent cross-check against PatentsView's disambiguated inventor record -- which resolves name variants to one canonical identity rather than counting raw filings -- puts him at 1,915 granted patents under a single verified inventor ID, the 20th most prolific individual patent holder in the entire US granted-patent record dating back to 1976.[2] Both numbers describe the same real thing from two different counting methods, and they agree on the scale: two decades of continuous, hands-on R&D work in LTE-Advanced, 5G, 6G, and Wi-Fi, before any of it became a licensing business at all.[1]
Ofinno signed its first LTE patent license, then built a dedicated Wi-Fi research team, then launched a 5G licensing program on top of the same foundation. One completed deal, arranged through the patent aggregator RPX Corporation, covered hundreds of assets described as including "a significant number" of standard-essential patents underlying core 4G LTE-Advanced features -- the kind of patent that isn't just infringed by accident, it's infringed by definition the moment a device implements the standard.[4] That's the actual mechanism: build the technology inside the standard everyone else has to implement, patent it, and the licensing revenue follows from adoption you don't have to sell.
Lucas took a reduced director's fee on the original Star Wars in exchange for keeping merchandising and sequel rights -- a decision that turned one film into a royalty system still paying out nearly fifty years later, worth far more than the film's own box office ever was. Ofinno is the identical structure, run on standards-essential wireless patents instead of movie merchandising: two decades of real, unglamorous technical work, converted into an ownership claim that keeps generating licensing revenue on other companies' shipping volume, indefinitely, without Ofinno building a single handset itself. Neither business is really selling a product. Both are selling the right to use something they built once and kept.
Why does this matter? "Patents are the company" isn't a metaphor here, and it isn't unique to Ofinno -- the same pattern shows up, at different scale, in the recorded USPTO patent-transaction activity of Qualcomm and Huawei, both concentrated in the identical wireless-communications and digital-transmission classifications Ofinno's own portfolio lives in.[2] The overlooked lever isn't the technology itself. It's the decision, made early and held onto, to own the standard rather than just ship a product that implements it -- the same decision Lucas made about his own film, a decade before anyone but him could see what it would eventually be worth.
One more detail worth sitting with, not as proof of anything, as texture: Ofinno's Reston headquarters sits at 1950 Opportunity Way, Suite 1200.[5] Audi and Volkswagen's North American headquarters occupies Suite 1500 in the same building, same address, after a 2023 lease at the same Reston Town Center development.[7] Whether or not the two companies have ever done business directly, the industry-level connection is real and documented: Volkswagen Group -- Audi included -- took a 5G license through Avanci, the patent pool that bundles cellular standard-essential patents from more than 60 rightsholders and now covers over 275 million connected vehicles.[6] A company that licenses exactly the category of patent modern cars now have to pay for, sharing an elevator bank with one of the automakers now paying for it, is either a coincidence of Reston commercial real estate or isn't one.
